Leiston wurde 1086 im Domesday Book als Leestuna/Lenestuna/Leisestuna/Leestuna erwähnt. Da zum Gemeindegebiet auch der Ort Sizewell gehört, firmiert der Stadtrat unter der Bezeichnung Leiston cum Sizewell.
