Laut Volkszählung hatte im Jahre 2011 die innere „built-up area subdivision“ von Leeds, die im Wesentlichen dem bis 1974 bestehenden County Borough Leeds entspricht, 474.632 Einwohner. Der Metropolitan Borough Leeds, der die Kernstadt von Leeds mitsamt ihren 1974 eingemeindeten Vororten umfasst, hat 757.655 Einwohner .
Leeds ist das kulturelle, finanzielle, gewerbliche und sportliche Zentrum von West Yorkshire, einem Ballungsgebiet mit mehr als 2,2 Millionen Einwohnern sowie der Leeds City Region, einer Metropolregion mit 3 Millionen Einwohnern.
