Die Landwirte haben über Jahrhunderte die Hänge auf Sifnos in Terrassen umgestaltet. Nur in den letzten Jahrzehnten hat die Pflege dieser Terrassen nachgelassen, weil eine andere, ertragreichere Ernte auf der Insel darauf wartet, gesammelt zu werden: der Tourismus. Meine grobe Schätzung ist, dass es mehr als 500 km Terrassenmauern auf der Insel gibt. Diese Terrassen halten mehr als 250.000 m**3 (Kubikmeter) Gestein, das von den Landwirten von Sifnos umpositioniert wurde, um diese Landschaft zu schaffen. Dies ist vergleichbar mit dem Volumen einer kleinen ägyptischen Pyramide.
