Der enthauptete Kopf von St. Johannes dem Täufer spielt eine wichtige Rolle in seinem Martyrium. Nach der Tradition wurde Johannes der Täufer auf Befehl von König Herodes Antipas ins Gefängnis geworfen und enthauptet, nachdem Salome, die Tochter der Herodias, auf Drängen ihrer Mutter den Kopf auf einem Silbertablett als Belohnung für ihren Tanz verlangt hatte. Der Kopf wurde Salome überreicht, die ihn ihrer Mutter gab. Die Jünger Johannes holten später den Leichnam und begruben ihn. Dieser Kopf symbolisiert das Martyrium und wird jährlich am 29. August in sowohl katholischen als auch orthodoxen Traditionen geehrt.
