Die Schlacht bei Actium, die am 2. September 31 v. Chr. am Ausgang des Ambrakischen Golfs vor der Westküste Griechenlands stattfand, besiegelte das Ende der Römischen Republik. Octavian, der spätere Kaiser Augustus, besiegte mit Hilfe von Marcus Agrippa in dieser Seeschlacht seinen Gegenspieler Marcus Antonius und die ägyptische Königin Kleopatra VII. und sicherte sich damit die Alleinherrschaft im Römischen Reich.
