Sparta, im Süden der Peloponnes gelegen, war in der Antike der Hauptort der Landschaft Lakonien und des Staates der Lakedaimonier. Sein Name wird im Deutschen meist im erweiterten Sinn für diesen Staat gebraucht, der über Jahrhunderte die stärkste Militärmacht des antiken Griechenlands war. Die spartanische Polis unterschied sich in vielerlei Hinsicht von anderen griechischen Stadtstaaten, speziell im Vergleich mit der Attischen Demokratie.
