Die Kirche San Michele Maggiore in der norditalienischen Stadt Pavia ist architektonisch eine Basilika und ein Schlüsselwerk der romanischen Entwicklung des lombardischen Baustils.
Die Vorgängerkirche war während der Herrschaft der Langobarden errichtet worden. In ihr wurde im Jahre 774 Karl der Große zum König der Langobarden gekrönt. Vierundzwanzig Tage nach dem Tod des Kaisers Otto III. ließ sich Arduin von Ivrea vom Bischof von Pavia in San Michele Maggiore zum König von Italien krönen. Um die von Arduin organisierte Opposition zu brechen, ließ sich der deutsche König Heinrich II. vom Erzbischof von Mailand an selber Stelle zum König von Italien krönen. Die Feierlichkeit wurde durch einen von Arduin organisierten blutigen Volksaufstand beendet, bei dem die Kirche in Flammen aufging. Nur der untere Teil des Glockenturms stammt noch von der langobardischen Kirche.
