Die Standseilbahn Montevergine wurde am 23. Juni 1956 eröffnet und verbindet die Stadt Mercogliano mit dem Kloster von Montevergine.
Die Idee einer Standseilbahn von Mercogliano auf den Berg Montevergine kam durch den damaligen Abt William De Cesare erstmals 1882 auf. Es dauerte jedoch bis zur Inbetriebnahme mit vielen Unterbrechungen beim Bau der Bahn bis zum 23. Juni 1956. Zwischen 1973 und 1981 war die Bahn aufgrund von umfangreichen Ausbesserungsarbeiten geschlossen.
