Die Veluwe ist das größte Moränenkomplex in den Niederlanden: 60 km von Norden nach Süden, mit einer Höhe von bis zu 110 Metern. Die Veluwe wurde vor etwa 200.000 Jahren während der Saale-Eiszeit im Pleistozän geformt. Gletscher, die etwa 200 Meter dick waren, schoben Sandablagerungen in der Rhein- und Maasdelta seitlich. Dies wurden die Hügel, die heute den größten Teil der Veluwe bilden. Da die Hügel aus Sand bestehen, verschwindet Regenwasser schnell und fließt in einer Tiefe von mehreren zehn Metern an den Rändern, wo es wieder an die Oberfläche kommt.
