Im Jahr 1360 wird zum ersten Mal über einen Hof Drakesteyn geschrieben. Die alte Geschichte von Drakensteyn ist eng verbunden mit der von Ridderhofstede Drakenburg, das sich in der Nähe befand und im 19. Jahrhundert abgerissen wurde.
In der Goldenen Ära werden in der Laagte von Pijnenburg übrigens eine große Anzahl von Schlössern und Landhäusern umgebaut und neu errichtet, wie Soestdijk - das spätere Schloss Soestdijk -, Schloss De Hooge Vuursche, De Eult, Pijnenburg, Eeuwijckshoeve.
Im Jahr 1780 findet ein Umbau statt, wodurch das Erscheinungsbild des Hauses verändert wird: die ionischen Säulen werden entfernt. Im Jahr 1807 wird Drakensteyn Eigentum von mr. Paulus Wilhelmus Bosch, Bürgermeister von Utrecht. Das Haus bleibt dann 150 Jahre in der Familie, bis es 1959 von Frederik Lodewijk Bosch van Drakestein an Prinzessin Beatrix verkauft wird. Sie lässt das Schloss restaurieren und zieht 1963 ein. Nachdem sie Königin wird, zieht sie 1981 nach Den Haag. Seitdem wird Drakensteyn als Sommer- und Gästehaus genutzt.
Das Anwesen und das Wohnhaus sind nicht zu besichtigen.
