Das Dorf Aalden besteht aus zwei Teilen, die durch die Durchgangsstraße Aelderstraat getrennt sind. Auf der einen Seite der Straße liegt Oud-Aalden, das alte Esdorf, das vollständig aus sächsischen Bauernhäusern besteht und als geschütztes dorfbild ausgewiesen ist. Auf der anderen Seite der Straße liegen die Neubaugebiete des Dorfes. Das benachbarte Nachbardorf Zweeloo mit der (Van Gogh) Kirche grenzt an den Neubau und ist lediglich durch die Aelderstroom oder Westerstroom getrennt.
