Es liegt nordöstlich von Joure und nordwestlich von Heerenveen, am Neuen Heerenveense Kanal. Das Dorf zählte im Jahr 2021 390 Einwohner. Zum Dorf gehört auch die Ortschaft Tweehuis. Vegelinsoord entstand in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts als Stobbegat während groß angelegter Torfabbauarbeiten in der Region. Das Dorf liegt im De Haskerveenpolder. Der Ortsname der Ortschaft wurde nach dem gleichnamigen Gewässer benannt, an dem es lag. Der heutige Name Vegelinsoord lässt sich auf die Familie Vegelin von Claerbergen zurückführen, die in der Region eine große Rolle gespielt hat.
