Das Gebiet von Vianen ist seit etwa dem Jahr 1000 besiedelt.
Vianen erhielt 1336 das Stadtrecht.
Bis heute hat das schöne Städtchen ein altes Zentrum, in dem sich an der platzartigen Voorstraat die wichtigsten Denkmäler befinden: die Grote Kerk, das Rathaus und das Lekpoort.
