Es liegt nördlich der Stadt Leeuwarden, zwischen Stiens und Hijum, mit denen es viel zusammenarbeitet. Durch das Dorfgebiet fließt der Finkumervaart, an dem sich auch ein Passantenhafen befindet. Im Jahr 2021 hatte das Dorf 160 Einwohner. Zur Gemeinde gehört auch die Bauerschaft Poelhuizen. Finkum ist als eine Huisterp entstanden, die rund um die christliche Zeitrechnung aufgeschüttet wurde. Dieser Terp wurde auf einer Wattkante angelegt. Die Ausdehnung von einer Huisterp zu einem Dorf kam wahrscheinlich durch einen Landsitz des Klosters Mariëngaarde in Hallum. Das Kloster besaß viel Land in der Region. Als das Kloster 1580 die Macht verlor, übernahmen vier adelige Familien dieses.
