Insbesondere in den ländlichen Bereichen Enschedes sprechen viele Alteingesessene bis heute ihre westfälische Mundart des Niedersächsischen .Die Stadt gehört zur Region Twente zwischen Hengelo und der Staatsgrenze zur Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Die östliche Nachbarstadt ist Gronau in Westfalen.
