Im Jahr 1913 wurde in Heerlen das Bernardinuscollege gegründet, eine Schule für Jungen. Bald entstand der Wunsch nach höherer sekundärer Ausbildung für Mädchen. 1920 gründeten die Schwestern von der Unbefleckten Empfängnis in Heerlen eine höhere Schule für Mädchen. Der Name lautete damals: RK HBS und Handelsschule für Mädchen, besser bekannt als St. Clara-College und lag an der Klompstraße. Erste Rektorin von 1920-1941 war Schwester Xavier Nolens. Das Coriovallum College erhielt 1969 diesen Namen, als das St. Clara-College eine gemischte Schule wurde. 1990 fusionierte das Coriovallum College mit dem Sintermeertencollege und führte unter dem Namen Sintermeertencollege fort.
