Der Doornse Kei stammt aus Skandinavien. Während der vorletzten Eiszeit, als eine Gletscherzunge bis zur Hälfte durch die Niederlande reichte und die Veluwe und den Utrechtse Heuvelrug formte, kamen auch umherirrende Steine mit ihm. Die meisten der ausgegrabenen umherirrenden Steine wurden als geologisches Denkmal in der Zanderij Maarn gesammelt, aber ein Stein war Ursprung des Tanzes und wurde auf ein Podest in den Kap-Wäldern gestellt.
