Das Karmeliterinnenkloster wurde 1875 von deutschen Karmeliterinnen gegründet, die ihr Kloster in Köln (Sankt Gereon) wegen des Kulturkampfes verlassen mussten. Kloster und Kapelle wurden nach einem Entwurf des Architekten Cuypers mit schlichten neogotischen Elementen erbaut. Seit 2002 ist das Kloster ein Rijksmonument.
Das Kloster ist insbesondere bekannt geworden, weil die heilige Teresia-Benedicta vom Kreuz (Edith Stein) hier gelebt hat (1938-1942).
