Hoogwoud ist ein Ort, der zur westfriesischen Gemeinde Opmeer in der Provinz Nordholland gehört. Der Ort hat 3.940 Einwohner. Hoogwoud liegt zwischen Hoorn und Alkmaar.
In einem Maisfeld bei Hoogwoud wurde Ende 2019 ein Wikingerring aus dem 10. Jahrhundert gefunden. Die Umgebung wurde ab dem 9. Jahrhundert von den Wikingern als Stützpunkt genutzt.
Der Ortsname taucht 1289 als Hoechhoutswouder und 1396 als Hogherswoude auf. Lange Zeit dachte man, dass der Ortsname zur Unterscheidung von einem damals nahegelegenen Nederwoude diente. Der älteste Name deutet jedoch darauf hin, dass der Ort in einem etwas höher gelegenen Waldgebiet lag. Dieser Wald war ein Moorwald, und trotz der Kultivierung waren noch viele Holzarten, Bäume oder Waldstücke vorhanden.
