Der Maeslantkering ist das Modell unserer hydrologischen Kenntnisse der Niederlande und Teil der Arbeiten des Delta-Plans. Der Bau begann 1987 und dauerte bis 1997. Jeder Arm des Maeslantkering ist etwa so lang wie der Eiffelturm.
Die Tore schließen sich bei Sturm. Wenn diese Tore nicht in der Lage sind, einen Weststurm abzuhalten, würden mehr als 1 Million Niederländer in Südholland mit nassen Füßen dastehen.
