Im Gebiet rund um Sappemeer sind die Spuren des Torfabbaus und des Schiffbaus noch immer sichtbar. So gibt es in Sappemeer ein altes Tor, das früher Zugang zur Hochmoorkolonie bot, und die Schaive Klabbe (schiefe Brücke) in Muntendam symbolisiert die früheren Lade- und Löschaktivitäten. Es gibt auch viel Natur; der Heemgarten und der sich entwickelnde Naturpark Tussen de Venen sind hier Beispiele dafür.
