Aveiro ist die Hauptstadt des Distrikts Aveiro im Norden von Portugal. Die Stadt liegt an der Küste des Atlantischen Ozeans 60 km südlich von Porto am Südufer der Ria de Aveiro die sich im Mündungsgebiet des Rio Vouga befindet. Aveiro ist Sitz des Bistums Aveiro. Wegen der drei Kanäle Canal de São Roque, Canal das Pirâmides und Canal dos Santos Mârtires wird die Stadt auch „das Venedig Portugals“ genannt.
