San Marino ist die vermutlich älteste bestehende Republik der Welt mit einer Geschichte, die der Überlieferung nach bis auf das Jahr 301 mit der Gründung durch den heiligen Marinus zurückgeht. Sie ist als Enklave vollständig von Italien umgeben. San Marino ist einer der sechs europäischen Zwergstaaten und sowohl mit einer Bevölkerung von rund 30.000 Einwohnern als auch mit einer Fläche von rund 60 km² der jeweils fünftkleinste international anerkannte Staat der Welt.
