Giresun im Nordosten der Türkei am Schwarzen Meer gelegen, ist Hauptstadt und zugleich mit über 100.000 Einwohnern größte Stadt der gleichnamigen Provinz Giresun. Gleichzeitig ist sie auch Zentrum des zentralen Landkreis .
Die Herkunft des Namens Giresun ist umstritten, die Stadt hieß in der Antike Kerasous , in der Neuzeit neugriechisch Κερασούντα Kerasounta. Dieser Name stammt vermutlich entweder von dem griechischen Wort Kerasion , was ‚Kirsche‘ bedeutet, oder vom ebenfalls griechischen ‚Keras‘ für ‚Horn‘.
