Adıyaman ist die Hauptstadt der türkischen Provinz Adıyaman. Zugleich ist die Stadt Verwaltungszentrum des Landkreises und beherbergt etwa 83,7 Prozent der Landkreisbevölkerung. Der Landkreis hingegen beherbergt etwa 48,8 Prozent der Provinzbevölkerung.
Die Geschichte der Stadt reicht sehr weit zurück. In der Antike war der Ort als Perrhe bekannt. Perrhe ist heute im Stadtteil Örenli. Nach der islamischen Eroberung im 8. Jahrhundert hieß der Ort Hisn Mansur . Mansur bin Cavana war Befehlshaber der Muslime. Der heutige türkische Name Adıyaman ist seit dem 17. Jahrhundert belegt.
