Die USS Texas ist ein außer Dienst gestelltes Schlachtschiff der United States Navy und jetziges Museumsschiff. Sie war gemäß der damaligen Praxis als „capital ship“ nach einem US-Bundesstaat benannt. Als einziges Schwesterschiff der USS New York gehörte sie der New York-Klasse an.
Weil die Royal Navy bei der Orion-Klasse das Hauptkaliber ihrer Schlachtschiffe von 30,5 cm auf 34,4 cm angehoben hatte, beschloss die US Navy, dass die der Wyoming-Klasse folgende New York-Klasse mit einem stärkeren Hauptkaliber ausgerüstet werden sollte. Da man die Briten übertrumpfen wollte, wählte man das Kaliber 35,6 cm. Die Anzahl der Kanonen war zunächst mit 12 geplant worden, aber das hätte eine Steigerung der Größe auf 30.000 t zur Folge gehabt. Ebenso wären die Baukosten erheblich angestiegen. Also blieb man bei dem Aufstellungschema, das im Wesentlichen dem der Delaware-Klasse entsprach.
