Das Kernkraftwerk Zion war die dritte Anlage mit Zwillings-Reaktoren des damaligen Energieversorgers Commonwealth Edison.
Es lieferte Strom für Chicago und das nördliche Viertel von Illinois.
Das Kraftwerk befand sich am äußersten östlichen Teil der Stadt Zion, Lake County . Diese liegt etwa 64 km Luftlinie nördlich von Chicago und etwa 68 km südlich von Milwaukee.
Die Anlage, nunmehr im Eigentum von Exelon, wurde im Februar 1998 stillgelegt, allerdings wurde bereits im Februar 1997 der Betrieb eingestellt. Damals hatte ein Operator versehentlich den Reaktor 1 abgeschaltet und dann versucht, ihn ohne die notwendigen Prozeduren wieder anzufahren. Der Reaktor 2 war zu der Zeit zum Austausch der Brennelemente abgeschaltet. Hauptgrund der Stilllegung war aber angeblich ein unwirtschaftlicher Betrieb.
