Oudenburg is one of the oldest cities in our country. The Romans built a castellum there as early as the fourth century as a defense against the invading Saxon pirates. At that time, the winding coastline still bordered the edge of the later city. The square structure of this fort is still clearly visible in the current village center. Also during the Middle Ages, Oudenburg played a notable role in Flanders. In this context, we mention the founding of the Saint Peter's Abbey around 1084. In terms of the wool industry, Oudenburg was one of the chief settlements in Flanders. It is a city with an ancient past, to which several monuments still bear witness.
