Hotton is located in the well-known limestone ridge of Devonian limestone. The limestone border is a narrow band south of the Fagne-Famenne and consists almost exclusively of limestone from the Upper Devonian. It's like a stair step for the Ardennes. It is a lot higher than the Fagne-Famenne depression. The rivers from the Ardennes, and that pass through this region, give origin to spectacular dissolution phenomena. In geology, these dissolution phenomena are called karst.
