America Halls

Description

This building was constructed from 1921 to 1926 by architects Jacques Obozinski and Fernand Petit, at the request of America and Co. In 1993, the building was classified as a monument.
The Halles America refer to the port function of the neighborhood, which is connected to the canal. At the current location of the boulevards of Dixmude and Ypres was the Commerce basin and the Customs warehouse. From 1910 to 1911, the Brussels Maritime port was built. The quay and the warehouse disappeared, and the city approved a new urbanization plan. It was here that many wholesalers of fruits and vegetables, both local and imported, settled in the 1920s. The company America and Co built this fruit hall where merchants from the area came to stock up.
This momentum was part of the economic recovery of the post-war period. Many other developments from the 1920s demonstrate this.
The mixed function of the building (residential/commercial/storage) is characteristic of this neighborhood. The importance of the residential function reflects the desire to make maximum use of the city’s area. Like most buildings in the vicinity, it has maintained both functions.
