La Gombe is a place located in the municipality of Esneux, in the Belgian province of Liège. It was a sandstone quarry from the 15th century until the year 1988.
La Gombe is situated on the banks of the River Ourthe, in the eastern Condroz, at the foot of a steep slope. The sandstone was initially quarried on a small scale. Several quarries followed one another over the centuries. In the 19th century, the quarry was exploited mechanically. In 1883, a large piece of the slope collapsed; at the top of the slope, until that time, stood the ruins of the fortress tower Montfort-la-Tour. This tower was located in the district of Montfort, which literally means fortified mountain. The tower was indeed a defense in the then Duchy of Limburg against incursions from the Duchy of Luxembourg during the Middle Ages. Since the great explosion of 1883, nothing remains of Montfort-la-Tour.
