In Molenstraat, by the bridge over the Mark, lies the beautifully restored Laermolen. Before 1381, there was a watermill at this location that was called 'Laermolen' ('Het Laer' = an undeveloped, marshy meadow). Initially, it was solely a grain mill. Later, there was also talk of a hammer mill or oil mill for crushing oilseeds. Over the years, the mill was destroyed and rebuilt several times. A group of enthusiastic residents of Hoogstraten, organized in the non-profit organization De Laermolen, restored this mill to its former glory between 2000 and 2004. Even the waterwheel is turning again.
