When Christophel Columbus discovered the Gulf of Paria and the Delta of the Orinico, he concluded that he reached the outskirts of the Earthly Paradise. The place that was mapped so many times on Midieval maps such as at the top of the Hereford Mappa Mundi, was discovered as far as Columbus was concerned. By Columbus's time the veiw on the Earthly Paradise by "the learned" was that is was a real place in the world. It was assumed to be in the farthest East (or West if you approach it from the other side) and that it was "no smaller than India or Egypt".
