Gutach im Breisgau is a municipality in the Elztal valley in the Emmendingen district, Baden-Württemberg. It is located at the transition of the Breisgau to the Black Forest, approximately 20 kilometers northeast of Freiburg im Breisgau.
Gutach lies in the area of a valley spider of the Elz, a right tributary of the Rhine. The main watercourse of the municipality, flowing straight southwest along a significant fault line, is joined from the southeast by the Wilde Gutach and from the north-northwest by the smaller Siegelbach. The municipality extends in a crescent shape from its eastern tip at the summit of Hörnleberg over the aforementioned valley spider with the northernmost offshoot of Kandel, particularly through the Siegelbachtal, up to the upper courses of two Elz tributaries that are located further north. The highest point is the summit of Hörnleberg, which is just below 280 meters above sea level and is located where the border crosses the Elz into Waldkirch. The largest settlements are the eponymous main town in the wide lower Elztal and Bleibach at the mouth of the Wilde Gutach, while the smallest of the three village settlement cores is Siegelau in the Siegelbachtal. In addition, there are several other hamlets, zinken, residential sites, and individual farms, especially in the valley system of the Siegelbach.
