The Weser dam in Bremen-Hastedt regulates the water level of the Middle Weser at Weser kilometer 362. The Bremen Weser dam from 1911 was replaced by a completely new structure from 1989 to 1993, which was put into operation on June 10, 1993. It is located about 180 meters downstream of the old dam.
The Lower Weser correction by Ludwig Franzius aimed to clean the Lower Weser of sediments through the acceleration of tidal currents, thus providing a deep navigation channel for seafaring with minimal effort. The tidal limit migrated upstream. This also extended the erosion of the riverbed into the Middle Weser. Bremen was required to put a stop to this development.
