The Vöhlinschloss is located in a dominant position above the town of Illertissen in the district of Neu-Ulm. The modern castle is the successor building of the high medieval Tissen castle and is today home to two museums. It also serves as a conference center for universities.
The multifaceted castle complex is situated on a small terrain spur that juts out from the north-south running ridgeline bordering the valley into the Lower Illertal to the northwest. Except to the southeast, the terrain spur drops steeply by about 30 meters on all sides, making the castle visible from the Illertal far and wide. The only accessible road to the castle leads over the Schlossallee from the east, with this road turning northwest shortly before reaching the castle moat. Additionally, there are two stair-cased pedestrian paths, one in the west leading to Bräuhausstraße and one in the east leading to Vöhlinstraße.
