Mogontiacum is the Latin name of today's city of Mainz, which it bore during its nearly 500-year affiliation with the Roman Empire. Mogontiacum originated from the legionary camp built by Drusus in 13/12 BC, which was strategically located on a hill over the Rhine and opposite the mouth of the Main along the Roman Rhine valley road.
