Description

The Protestant-Lutheran St. Jacobi Town Church is located in Neustadt in the district of Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains. The tower of the church, which was remodeled in neo-Gothic style in 1884, is the tallest building in the area.
It was first mentioned as a town church in 1346. Since the Reformation in 1539, the church has served as a place of worship for the Protestant-Lutheran community. Over time, renovations became necessary repeatedly. By the middle of the 19th century, its structural condition had deteriorated so badly that in 1860 a complete reconstruction was decided. However, it took another 22 years for the realization, during which decay progressed to such an extent that it posed a constant danger to visitors. In its meeting on June 19, 1882, the church council decided to take out a loan to secure the planned costs of 75,000 marks. During the course of the work, it soon became clear that this amount would not be sufficient. Upon completion of all works, the construction cost amounted to 191,859 marks and 84 pfennigs. The work began on March 27, 1883, according to plans by Gotthilf Ludwig Möckel. The construction management was handled by Georg Rudolf Vogel from Dresden. Möckel retained the vaulted choir from the 15th century. He connected it organically with the completely newly designed nave through a newly created triumphal arch. The entire interior design was also created based on Möckel's ideas. On November 30, 1884, the first Advent, the new church was consecrated in a ceremonial service by Superintendent Dr. Blochmann. The sermon was delivered by the then Neustadt pastor Satlow.
