The German-Luxembourg nature park is a cross-border nature park, which was established on April 17, 1964 by a state treaty between the Land of Rhineland-Palatinate and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. This made it the first cross-border nature park in Western Europe.
The park has an area of approximately 789 km², of which approximately 357 km² in Luxembourg and approximately 432 km² in Rhineland-Palatinate in the southern Eifel. It contains parts of the Eifel on both sides of Sauer and Our. Noord joins the Hoge Venn-Eifel German-Belgian nature park.
For the German side of the nature park, the nature park south of the Eifel is synonymous. It was already defined in its original borders in 1958 and represents the third oldest German nature park.
On the Luxembourg side there is no exact counterpart to the nature park, but here the existing nature park Our, the Luxembourg Switzerland in Echternach and other areas still to be developed overlap.
The national nature parks work together in the context of INTERREG projects, for example in the "Project Nat'OUR" for the restoration of Our.
The nature park is institutionally supported by the "Vereinigung Deutsch-Luxemburgischer Naturpark", whose office is located in the Verein Naturpark Südeifel - organization of the Southern Eifel nature park. The management of the nature park has been in the buildings of the municipality of Irrel since mid-2006.
In addition to the landscape, the National Monument of the Belgium-Germany-Luxembourg border triangle is one of the attractions of the nature park.
