Brual is mentioned for the first time in the 10th century. According to tradition, there were three castles in Brual.
The proximity to the East Frisians has not always been beneficial for the Brualers. The closure of the Ems, the most important waterway in the area, was easy to implement in Brual. The possession of the fortifications, the Dieler Schanze, was quite valuable to the interested peoples and princes.
