Cova Tallada - Javea

Description

Cova Tallada is one of the most impressive and unique places along the Costa Blanca. It is a spectacular sea cave carved into the steep limestone cliffs of the Cap de Sant Antoni , on the border between Dénia and Jávea (Xàbia) , in the heart of the Montgó Natural Park and the marine reserve.

The name Cova Tallada literally means "carved cave" . Since the Islamic period (11th–12th century) and intensively until 1972, the cave served as a maritime quarry . The characteristic, porous tosca stone quarried here was used for the construction of historical monuments such as the Château de Dénia and the San Bartolomé church in Jávea.

Inside, you find vast halls with high ceilings , flat walls left behind after stonemasonry, and natural basins where seawater flows into the interior of the cave.

The crystal-clear water right in front of the cave is a prime location for snorkeling , thanks to the rocky bottom with rich underwater flora and fauna.

During busy periods (usually from June 15 to October 15 ), access is strictly regulated. You must apply for a free online permit in advance via the official website of the Valencian Natural Parks (parquesnaturales.gva.es).

You can reach the Cova Tallada in two ways:

1) On foot (Walk from Dénia):

The most popular walking route starts at the end of Carrer de la Vía Láctea in the Les Rotes district in Dénia.

It is about a 1.5 kilometer walk (about 45 to 60 minutes each way).

Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous. The path is rugged, rocky, and uneven, with steep sections and cables or ropes attached to the cliff for extra grip. Sturdy shoes (no flip-flops) are absolutely necessary.

2) From the sea (Kayak or organized tour):

Visiting the cave by kayak or SUP is a great alternative, especially if you don't want to hike or if the hiking permits are sold out.

Organized tours usually depart from Dénia. Please note: motorized boats are not allowed to come close to the cave.

Formerly, the cave contained a Latin inscription attesting that King Philip III of Spain had visited the cave in the year 1599 ( "Philippus III Hisp. Rex cavernam hanc penetravit a. MDXCIX" ). Although this historical inscription has since disappeared, it shows that this place has attracted royal interest for centuries.

The porous tosca stone , which was quarried from the walls of the Cova Tallada, has not been allowed to be mined since 1972 due to strict environmental laws. Because the quarry has been closed for decades, nowadays you can actually only find this specific type of stone in the region when a historic building is demolished or restored.

Thanks to the imposing rock chambers, the mysterious shadows, and the unique light filtering through the sea entrance, the cave forms a beloved backdrop for photographers , filmmakers, and lovers of natural beauty.
