Once it stood in the Bellamypark, now the statue of Frans Naerebout - the founding father of the Vlissingen pilot service - graces the Boulevard De Ruyter.
Naerebout (1748-1818) served as a VOC pilot, tasked with safely guiding ships in and out of the Scheldt estuary. It was the same Frans Naerebout who, in July 1779, managed to rescue more than 80 people from a sinking East Indiaman, 'De Woestduyn'. In 1788, another ship, the 'Zuiderburg', lost its rudder while on its way to China with 400 people on board. This ship also threatened to sink and drifted for six days among the ice floes. Once again, Naerebout managed to reach this ship and safely brought it to English Plymouth using various tricks. A true hero of Vlissingen indeed...
