De Waddeneilanden liggen in de Noordzee, ten noorden van Nederland en Duitsland en ten westen van Denemarken. Tussen de eilanden en het vaste land ligt de Waddenzee, die bij eb grotendeels droogvalt en daardoor een zeer belangrijk fourageergebied is voor vogels. De Nederlandse eilanden hebben een oppervlakte van 405,2 km² en tellen ongeveer 23872 inwoners.Het grootste eiland is het Nederlandse Texel.
