’s-Heerenberg is a small town located on the southeastern slope of the hilly region in the municipality of Montferland. It received city rights from William I, lord of the Land of den Bergh in 1379. City rights were part of the so-called feudal system, in which large landowners (prince or bishop) lent part of their ownership rights in exchange for various obligations and services such as political and military support. In the Netherlands, these rights were abolished when the constitution of the Batavian Republic came into effect in 1798.
The historical center of ‘s-Heerenberg is right at the entrance of the castle Huis Bergh. One of the many historical buildings is also the Neije Raethuys opposite the Stadsmuseum Bergh.
