Heuvelland

The Heuvelland is a region in the south of the Netherlands, characterized by a hilly landscape. The Heuvelland in the most commonly used sense encompasses most of South Limburg. The region should not be confused with the municipality of Heuvelland in West Flanders. To avoid confusion with hilly landscapes elsewhere, the term 'Limburg Heuvelland' is often used.
The boundaries of the Limburg Heuvelland are not formally defined, and there are various opinions on which areas should be included in the Heuvelland. The Heuvelland in a stricter sense refers to the region east of the A2, south of the A79, and southwest of the A76, and roughly corresponds to the Mergelland or Chalkland. A broader definition is usually applied, in which the Heuvelland refers to the rural part of Limburg south of Sittard, where the landscape is somewhat hilly, including the fairly flat plateaus. In this latter definition, the Central Plateau, the Plateau of Doenrade, and the Plateau of Ubachsberg, as well as the non-urban parts of the regions of Maastricht, Western, and Eastern Mining Region are included. In the broadest definition, even the urbanized areas are considered part of the Heuvelland.
