Ginneken is a neighborhood located between the districts of IJpelaar and Ruitersbos in the south of Breda. In local parlance, Ginneken is called 't Ginneke. It is close to the Mastbos and the Markdal. Until 1942, Ginneken was a separate village.
According to Belgian etymologists, the origin of the name 'Ginneken' is old and probably dates back to the Gallo-Roman period. The suffix /-eken/ goes back to the Latin /-iacum/. The name part /Ginn-/ can be traced back to a Celtic personal name Gimmo or Geminius. 'Ginneken' originally meant: 'domain of Gimmo/Geminius'.
