Architecture: House architect Joan van der Mey (Snijdersberg), founder of the Amsterdam School.
Joan Melchior van der Meij is regarded as the founder of 'The Amsterdam School', an expressionist architectural movement from the early twentieth century. The Scheepvaarthuis in Amsterdam, which Van der Meij designed in 1912, is internationally known as the first building in this expressionist style. Van der Meij, originally from the Rijnmond area, settled in Geulle in 1910 after traveling through Europe for four years with his wife as a multiple winner of the Prix de Rome. He bought a three-hundred-year-old farmhouse that he transformed into a studio home at Snijdersberg, four hours by train from his work in Amsterdam.
