Because the Maashorst is situated higher than the surrounding area, the region is drier than the rest. People love that, so centuries ago, people already lived here. And where people come, the environment changes. Medieval farmers cut a lot of wood for the construction of fields. On those cleared plots of land, expansive heathlands emerged. The farmers let their sheep graze on them. They ate the heathlands so bare that the sand was exposed. The wind began to blow that sand around. The result: the blowing dunes of Bedaf. A special piece of primeval area where you can wander freely and where it feels like time has stood still.
Walk along the winding paths between the ancient trees. Gaze over the sandy hills and watch the kids build huts and slide down the dunes. Also fun: exploring the area on horseback!
