This junction cycle route takes you from Appelscha via the beautiful Drents-Friese Wold to Frederiksoord. Here, in 1818, Johannes van den Bosch founded the Colonies of Benevolence. A project that was intended to boost poverty reduction in the Netherlands. In 2021, the Colonies were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Visit the Museum De Proefkolonie in Frederiksoord and discover the passion of Johannes van den Bosch. When continuing your route via Wilhelminaoord, Boschoord and Zorgvlied you will be surprised how much you can still find in the landscape of this project from the 19th century.

In Frederiksoord you see the colony houses. The houses you see in Zorgvlied next to the church were once built by Johannes van den Bosch as an agricultural school.

At Appelscha you will find several boarding places, where you can easily park. There are also plenty of overnight locations here, from where you can ride this cycle route.
