Description by the author

Last update: February 1, 2025. A section of cycle path along the provincial road has been exchanged for the gravel path along the De Donck nature theater. More gravel cycle paths have been added over the Strabrechtse Heide, the Rummeling gravel path has been included in the route at Maarheeze, and the Stalmansweg (partly gravel) has been integrated into the route at Someren-Heide. The route is now about 3 km shorter, and the proportion of gravel has increased by 3%.

From the parking lot at Keelven, you start a route that partly includes gravel cycle paths and gravel roads, which are (mostly) well-suited for road bikes (good puncture-resistant tires like Continental All-Season tires or Schwalbe Marathon Plus, and tires at least 25 mm wide are recommended). The gravel share is 48% of the total distance. The gravel cycle paths on the Strabrechtse Heide (and the passage through the Kleine Aa valley) have a clay layer, causing these paths to retain a wet surface for longer after rain periods, and you may get quite dirty from splashing mud while cycling.

First, you cycle along the Keelven over partly unpaved cycle paths towards the De Swinkelsche golf course, passing the Den Evert mill and the De Donck nature theater. After that, you ride mostly along paved roads to Lierop and to the hamlet of Moorsel. Just before the hamlet of Moorsel, you switch back to unpaved cycle paths across the Strabrechtse Heide and pass many fens (typical of this area). Later, you ride along cycle paths with natural surfaces through the Herbertus forests. Finally, you reach the concrete cycle path along the provincial road Heeze - Someren.

After following this cycle path for a few kilometers, you head into the woods towards Sterksel over partly unpaved roads and later towards the nature reserve the Vrolijke Jager. You cycle along unpaved roads and cycle paths along the Vrolijke Jager. Then you ride over asphalted roads to Maarheeze (through the greenery-rich villa area) and further on to cycle along well-drivable unpaved roads through the Weerterwald. You pass the meadow clan of the former farm De Grashut, which has been transformed into a nature reserve, the observation tower overlooking the meadows, and the border church memorial. At the pub Daatjeshoeve, you reach the paved road again, but not for long: soon, you will cycle back into the Weerterwald.

After leaving the Weerterwald, you ride over a mix of well-drivable unpaved roads and good asphalt roads towards the village of Laar. Then you head towards the Kievitsbeek, partly over unpaved roads. After the Kievitsbeek, there is a nine-kilometer connecting section over asphalt roads, which brings you to the nature reserve das Keelven (Somerensche Heide).

You cycle around the Keelveen mainly on narrow, exposed, and paved cycle paths (from the opposite side to the beginning of the route). Very briefly, you follow the concrete cycle path along the Heeze - Someren road, before plunging back into the Strabrechtse Heide, first over unpaved roads (which have a bit more sand than gravel) and further over gravel cycle paths. You ride along the largest fen in the Netherlands (the Beuven). The last kilometers lead over paved roads back to the starting point.

Shorter variants of this route can be found at:
Short Strade Bianche over the Strabrechtse Heide (36 km) and Vroolijke Jager and Strabrechtse Heide: Strade Bianche (51 km)
